Xylitol

Xylitol

In the medical device, xylitol acts as a nutrient substrate for the normal vaginal flora, at the same time preventing the development of pathogenic germs on the vaginal mucosa with which the medical device may come into contact during handling or administration.
Xylitol has been reported to improve barrier function and suppress the growth of potential skin pathogens. It acts as a prebiotic and local use of xylitol in low concentrations (1 – 3%) prevents the development of pathogens without interfering with the vitality of lactobacilli.
The mechanism of action consists in the growth of saprophytic microorganisms to the detriment of pathogenic species by stimulating the growth of beneficial fermentation products.
